An investigation is under into what may be Fiji’s worst highway accident in history.

Ten people died when a Raiwaqa Bus lines bus carrying fifty-four passengers suddenly began filling with smoke as it traveled along the highway.

According to reports, the driver was unable to stop the bus and people began jumping from the moving vehicle.  It is said the driver jumped as well,  just before the bus finally crashed into a ditch and the thick smoke, apparently fuel or hydraulic fluid, burst into flames. Those still aboard, apparently some of them children, were trapped.

Sub-Divisionsl Medical Officer Sigatoka Dr. Abdul Shah says the 10 people were pronounced dead on arrival.

“They suffered burns, two are quite critical, they’ll be transferred to CWM soon, 2 are in stable condition, the ones that are deceased are 10 of them. They were basically trapped inside the bus and couldn’t escape out, so they were extensively burnt, in the bus, I don’t know how extensive the fire was but looking at the remains of the passengers they were really burnt out, but the ones that are here are very critical”.

A number of people were treated and released.

The fatal bus had been chartered from Raiwaqa bus lines and was heading to a funeral being held in Martintar, Nadi.
