Auckland's southwestern motorway to the airport reopened a short time ago, after a massive blaze in Onehunga late on Monday afternoon.

More than 80 fireman, and 16 appliances took more than an hour to bring the fire at the Mitre10 store on Beachcroft Road under control.

The entire store was well ablaze when fire crews and police arrived.

There have been no injuries but several explosions were heard coming from inside the building, and another building behind the Mitre 10 also caught on fire.

Thick black smoke that was billowing out of the building could be seen from as far away as the North Shore.

Police are warning motorists to expect delays on the Airport road.

Fire officers are still dampening down the building, which officials say contains asbestos.

Northern fire communications shift manager Jaron Phillips says the fire was reported at 5.05pm.

Police have had set up road blocks at the intersection of Neilson and Wharangi, Princess and Hill, St George and Church and Beachcroft and Church St.

Reports of damage to a power transformer have also been received which may affect power supply in the immediate area.

It is expected that emergency services will be on site for some time.
